Tour of the Beargrass Nature Preserve to learn to identify trees and shrubs in winter, and to see restoration progress made planting natives and removing invasive shrubs. Wild Ones Louisville paid the Center for the naturalist guide who was a staff member of the Center.

We held a Meet and Greet that we advertised to members and on our Facebook page. Our featured speaker was our chapter Secretary, Jacquelyn Hawkins-McGrail, who spoke about "The Secret Life of Trees". We offered refreshments so we could get to know attendees.

BRANDY FOR BUTTERFLIES! Local organizations will table at this Copper & Kings Brandy for Butterflies Event this Sunday September 24 from 4- 7 pm. It's a fund raiser for Re-Wilding Louisville (started and managed by Idlewild Butterfly Farm and Creasey Mahan Preserve) ! AND THERE WILL BE MONARCH TAGGING.
Wild Ones Louisville will have a table there, and Lynn Horrar and Margaret Carreiro will be there.

Copper & Kings will host Brandy for Butterflies, coinciding with the fall migration, to celebrate and raise money for Re-Wilding Louisville, a collaborative organization that funds pollinator gardens at non-profit facilities in Louisville.
Copper & Kings Brandy for Butterflies, featuring a monarch tag and release in partnership with Idlewild Butterfly Farm and Insectarium.
The event will feature specialty cocktails and food from Copper & Kings that showcases local, native ingredients. A portion of profits to be donated to ReWilding.

"Creating and Managing Landscapes for Native Bees" with Heather Holm

Join Wild Ones Honorary Director Heather Holm as she explores the nesting habitats, life cycles, pollen collection, brood rearing, and general characteristics of some of the most common native bees in eastern North America, while highlighting the pollination of native plants and the mutualism between native plants and native bees.
When creating and managing thriving habitats for native bees, many factors such as seasonal phenology, nesting strategies, and flower preferences must be considered—and with approximately 3,600 species in North America (north of Mexico), there are many unique aspects to keep in mind when managing successful landscapes for bees.

The Louisville Chapter of Wild Ones held their first annual meeting to elect Board Members. Refreshments and a outside Speaker were provided. Treasurer Barbara Berman prepared a Powerpoint presentation about the history of Wild Ones National and Louisville Chapter and our engagement with managing Wildflower Woods in Cherokee Park in Louisville. Hart Hagan also gave a brief presentation on the detailed history of our chapter. The outside speaker, Jennifer Palmer, spoke on The Artful Farmer, and we learned about how she is managing her farm to conserve soil and to enhance native plants in her meadow.
Tour Sara Ceresa's Urban Forest Members Only

We will explore a 3-acre forest property, aka Belmar Farm, that Sara has been managing since February, 2021.
You will see evidence of Sara’s efforts to eradicate bush honeysuckle, tree of heaven, and other invasive plants while holding space to encourage growth of existing native plants, allow germination of native seeds from the seed bank, and introduce new native plants for a more diverse ecosystem.
Sara recommends wearing long sleeves and pants to protect from ticks and dense vegetation, a hat, and sturdy shoes for walking on uneven terrain. Bring drinking water, bug spray, and a walking stick if desired.
